Championship Round 1

We travelled to Rochfortbridge on Saturday evening to take on Ballycomoyle in Round 1 of the Championship. Despite been short a number of key players, the lads on duty put in a fine hours work to record a 2:15 to 1:07 win and secure the two points on offer. After a cagey first half where there was just a point between the sides, Bun upped the ante in the second half to stretch the lead out.

Barry O Mara was first off the mark when he kicked a point from a free after he was fouled when on the attack. Ballycomoyle responded with a fine point from play before Ronan Scally ventured forward to kick his first point of the day.

O Mara was on hand to kick an exquisite point from a tight angle before Ken Conroy kicked a fine point off the left after been found by Brian Maguire. Shane McGovern then ventured forward to kick a fine point from play as Bun opened up a 0:05 0:02 lead.

The key score of the half came then when O Mara and Mark Donnelly combined to set up Conroy to fire low to the net. A brilliant finish from a tight angle. Ballycomoyle responded instantly and scored a goal of their own to bring the lead back to three points. A free followed by a two pointed free brought the teams level but on the stroke of half time, Dave Newman passed to Scally to fire over the lead point at the short whistle.

A fired up Bun started the second half meaning business. Matt Hope made a brilliant run forward and he was found by John Kiernan before he fired low to the net. It was a big score at a crucial stage and Bun enjoyed wind advantage for the second half.

Ronan Scally kicked his third point of the day with an excellent burst forward but this was cancelled out when Ballycomoyle kicked their opening score of the half. Peter Tormey marked his introduction with an immediate score off his left. O Mara then kicked a two pointed free to stretch the lead out further.

Another Tormey score was quickly followed by an O Mara free from the 14 metre line. O Mara then kicked another point from play from a tight angle as Bun started to dominate the key battles over the field. O Mara kicked the final score of the game from a free after he was fouled. A final score of 2:15 to 1:07.

This was a good opening round win for Bun. Gordon Medforth made his Championship debut and performed very well. The defence were brilliant throughout and keeping the opposition to two points in the second half is a reflection of their collective efforts.

Up front the lads all played very well and will be pleased with their conversion rate from the chances created. Next up is Ballynacaragy in two weeks.
