ACFL Division 3 vs Maryland

We travelled to Athlone TUS on Friday night last to take on Maryland in the opening round of the 2024 league. Maryland made a bright start and were 1:02 to no score in front at the ten minute mark. Gradually, Bun clawed into this lead and points from Barry O Mara, Mark Donnelly, O Mara again and an Aidan Finnan 45 saw us go into the break 1:05 to 0:04 in arrears. Bun played some great football in the first half in what was a physical encounter.

The second half was an equally tough battle and it was Bun who made the strong start this time. They were on top in the opening five minutes but didn’t trouble the score board. Then in the sixth minute of the half Simon Moorehead found himself in space after great work from Ken Conroy, and hit a rasping shot off the crossbar. Barry O Mara was on hand to apply the finish to the net from the rebound.

Bun were on top at this stage of the game and buoyed by O’ Mara’s goal they turned over some great ball in defence. Conor Newman in particular put in a splendidly timed tackle to deny Maryland a certain goal in this period. Bun then sent in a long high ball to Brian Maguire who claimed the mark with a fine catch. He duly applied the finish from the resulting kick to tie the game up at 1:05 apiece.

The next ten minutes saw no scores recorded but there was certainly no inch given or taken in this period. When Bun were reduced to 14 players, after a second yellow card was harshly given, numerical disadvantage proved crucial. In the final period of the game Maryland scored three points to claim victory in what was a tough defeat for Bun after the great effort they put in.

While an opening round defeat is hard to take, Bun can be proud of their effort, commitment and work rate in this game. If they display these qualities throughout the league, the positive results will follow.

Team: Liam Mitchell, Conor Newman, Gavin Lyons, David Newman, Ronan Scally, Finian Newman, Matthew Hope, John Kiernan, Simon Moorehead, Enda Newman, Ken Conroy, Mark Donnelly, Barry O Mara, Aidan Finnan & Brian Maguire. Subs: Kevin Mitchell for Donnelly, Cian Tighe for E. Newman, Eoin McGowan for Lyons, Patryk Kupferschmidt, Daniel Bishop, Andy Whitney and Tommy Murphy.
